Do You Need Life Insurance? A Simple Guide for Families

You likely need life insurance if anyone depends on your income — a spouse, children, aging parents, or a business partner. Its job is simple: if something happens to you, it replaces your income and covers major expenses so the people you love aren’t left with a financial crisis on top of their grief.

Here’s a plain-English guide to deciding whether you need it and how much to get.

Who needs life insurance?

You should strongly consider a policy if you:

  • Have children or other dependents who rely on you financially.
  • Share a mortgage or other large debt with someone.
  • Are the primary or co-earner in your household.
  • Own a business with partners or loans tied to you.
  • Want to cover final expenses so family doesn’t have to.

If you’re single with no dependents and no shared debt, you may need little or none — though locking in a low rate while you’re young and healthy is still worth considering.

How much coverage do you need?

A common starting point is 10–12 times your annual income, then adjust for your situation. Add up:

  • Income your family would need to replace (years × salary)
  • Remaining mortgage and other debts
  • Future costs like college tuition
  • Final expenses

Subtract any savings and existing coverage. The gap is roughly how much life insurance you need.

Term vs. whole life insurance

Term life covers you for a set period — usually 10, 20, or 30 years — and is the most affordable option. It’s ideal for covering the years your family depends on you most (raising kids, paying off a mortgage).

Whole life lasts your entire life and builds cash value over time. It costs more but can be part of a long-term financial or estate plan.

For most families, a term policy provides the most protection per dollar. Some people layer a smaller whole-life policy on top for lifelong coverage.

A few myths worth clearing up

  • “It’s too expensive.” A healthy 30-year-old can often get substantial term coverage for the price of a few coffees a month.
  • “I have coverage through work, so I’m set.” Employer coverage is usually limited and ends when you leave the job. A personal policy follows you.
  • “I’m young and healthy, so I’ll wait.” That’s exactly when rates are lowest — waiting almost always costs more.
